Peter, it is more targeted but more energy sapping than fuel reduction
burns. We rake around the trees for two metres and spread the debris further
afield. On steep slopes we rake further than the two metres down slope and
around some trees dear to out hearts we do a bit more too. Trees with even
small fires scars a vulnerable to even slow moving cool burns as they
naturally build up their own debris around their bases which can set the
fire intruding further. As the trees we worry about have been through many
fires and have the scars to prove it a single hot fire could bring them
down.
