Greetings,
As of Monday there were still good numbers of Pink-eared Duck on Hasties Swamp
and at least 23 Freckled Duck, still here after a year of sighting maximising
at 28 by my count. With only binoculars it was not possible to find the duck
with the reddish base to the bill.
Numbers of Martins and Swallows at the Afghanistan Avenue of Honour site
continue to fluctuate wildly but no more sightings of Red-rumped Swallows to
report. It may have been that there were four of these swallows and I
overlooked two young birds, or rather dismissed them as Tree Martins.
The fruit eating pigeons are doing really well this season with lots of fruit
around but the numbers of White-headed and Topknots in Yungaburra’s street
trees still has not reached the numbers for before cyclone Larry.
A Swamp Harrier at Hasties Swamp was a surprise this early in the season.
Blue-faced Parrot-Finches can be found along the roads south of the Malanda
volcano especially where there are trees or bushes mixed with the seeding
grasses.
Regards,
Alan
