Birdline North Queensland

Published sightings for the week ending 2 Mar 2014.

Sun 23 Feb Black Bittern Payet observation tower, Townsville Town Common CP
Checking out water at the Tower, I saw a Black Bittern fly in low over the grass, with its bright orange throat glowing in the morning light. What a delight. It went down in the grass about 25 metres in front of the Tower and its head was still visible with binos. 7.45am. The whole Common showed a flurry of breeding activity after the recent rain and return of water.

Wed 12 Feb White-headed Pigeon, Little Kingfisher, Black-faced Monarch Ross River Bush Gardens
On Townsville Birdlife's monthly survey of the Bush Garden we were pleasantly surprized to see these 3 species. All in very close proximity were 1 Little kingfisher, 4 Black-faced Monarch and 1 White-headed Pigeon. This is the first time that I have seen a White-headed Pigeon in Townsville.
