Hi Bob,
Not sure how you'd go for either owl at Melaleuca.  Masked Owls have a fairly 
regular roost at Port Arthur, but I haven't been to see these ones myself, so 
hopefully others on here who have been will have accurate info.  Boobooks 
(Morepork now, I believe) are around Bruny Island, St. Helens, etc.  We've had 
Masked Owls here in the NW, but not often.

For waders near Hobart, your best bet is Pipeclay Lagoon, and Orielton Lagoon.  
Both are to the east and SE of Hobart.  You'll really need a scope for both.
