Congratulations, Alan! You have blitzed the Australian competition in Bird
a Day, and most of the international players as well. I stayed in the event
until July 10th, when I simply ran out of birds I hadn't registered before.
I was thrilled, because my original target was Easter.
For me, the benefits were:
Getting out birding more often, though not necessarily having many more
full days of birding
Paying much closer attention to calls
Honing my ID skills, particularly for "jizz"
Developing a much better knowledge of where to find particular species in
my district
and thus ... Developing a better knowledge of the birding hotspots around me
Finding some fantastic new places near home that I'd never birded before
Much more "opportunistic" birding - or "drive by" birding - perhaps taking
a detour on the way home from work to see a target species
There were few disadvantages - perhaps a little more driving than usual
going to and from work, and a few earlier starts and late finishes, but I'm
now driving a small diesel that gets better than 4.8 l/100km consistently,
so my environmental footprint is actually smaller than previously. I
suppose I spent a lot more time birding than doing things like riding my
bike or playing the piano, but birding can be beneficial - see my list
above!
Strategic birding is also a lot of fun ... so I think I will be doing BAD
again next year - if I make it to Easter I'll be more than happy.
