In the course of a lengthy conversation with a high school teacher mate
about GIS, GPS and geography (yep, we both need to get a life and discuss
apps) my colleague mentioned the difficulty of teaching the subject given
the paucity of equipment in his school. We both realised this issue would be
sorted as soon as that nice Mr Pine brought in a more equitable funding
system but in the interim I thought about the old GPS units that many of us
drop in a drawer when the new one comes along.
The idea we struck on was appealing to people who use such devices to donate
their old one to a south western Sydney High School to teach young people
the joys of transects, point counts and to become obsessed with Eastings and
Northings (or is the other way round?). So if any of you have an old Etrex
or similar that is waiting for a new home let me know off-line

good folk from birding-aus can be the effective sponsors of some Jonahs and
Jai'me (yep it's that sort of centre of learning excellence) coming to grips
with navigation, satellites and maybe their application to our flora and
fauna.
