I was woken at 3am this morning by an Eastern Koel, doing its ko-el, ko-el call. Being from Victoria, this wasn't a familiar noise to me (then again, at 3am nothing much is familiar to me). I've seen (and heard) Koels before, but it wasn't a call that sprang to mind. I had frankly no idea what it was. I made a quick sound recording on my iPod and decided I'd figure it out when I woke. It didn't take me long. I might add that in this case the PK birds app wasn't as useful as it might have been. It's been noted before that it's missing the ko-el ko-el call recording. Thank goodness for the birds in backyards app, which has a recording, also by Fred Van Gessel.
