So a lifer will always be a tick but a tick not necessarily a lifer...

A tick is the first sighting of a species in a defined region.

A lifer is the first sighting of a legitimate representative of a species.

A tick depends on where you see a species.  A lifer is a lifer is a lifer.
It doesn't matter where you see it.
