Hey Pete,

It's a shadow alright - your mentioning that the sun was low and the darkness 
of all other shadow areas on the bird are consistent with its location and 
darkness.

The narrow band is what we would expect the shadow to look like from the bird's 
right wing.

One of those serendipitous moments....
