They are all Fairy Martin nests. The nests that look superficially like
swallow nests are incomplete Fairy Martin nests.

Subject: Photo ID: Welcome Swallow nests?
I was just reading an article about the old transcontinental telegraph
route that includes a picture of "wasp nests." They look like swallow nests
to me (third picture down):

Not being particularly strong on nest identification (at best) and never
having been to this part of the country, can anyone suggest whose nests the
picture depicts? They look every bit like swallow nests to me and, as best
as I can guess, Welcome Swallows are the only likely bird in the middle of
the continent.
Thoughts welcome!
