Hi All,
Another reply from the NSW Government in relation to the Pink-eared Duck which
has been added to the list of species under the Game Management Program in
2012.
With the disbandment of the Game Council a new body is now administrated by the
Native Game Bird Management Committee a body set-up by the Department of
Primary Industries, who will shortly assume responsibility from the NPWS and
set quotas for native game bird species. These quotas will not be set each year
but may roll over from one year to the next, which has some danger for the
population, especially if seasonal or climatic changes are not considered.
In 2014 when the control for native species management becomes part of the
portfolio of the Department of Primary Industries and not the Office of
Environment & Heritage must be of concern, especially if the Shooters Party is
successful in its aim of the addition of a number of other species to their
wish list.
The NPWS in 2012/13 season authorised a total of 10 PE Ducks to be culled for
damage mitigation purposes. I guess the question is, how much damage can 10 PE
Duck’s do to a rice crop, a lot apparently.
