I've not long returned from visits to Yuraygir and Bundjalung National Parks
in northern NSW.
Interesting sightings included a Streaked Shearwater offshore from Woody
Head and a Wandering Tattler at Brooms Head. All along the coast, thousands
of Short-tailed Shearwaters were buffeted by strong winds with many hundreds
of dead and dying birds. At one point, shearwaters were literally falling
out of the sky, landing on roads and in gardens all over the place. Similar
occurrences were apparently reported elsewhere along the NSW coast. This is
the biggest wreck of young Short-tailed Shearwaters returning to their
breeding grounds for the first time that I've experienced.
Also of interest about Brooms Head were good numbers of Southern Emu-wren
and Tawny-crowned Honeyeater. Emu was also seen, while White-eared Monarch
was present at Iluka Nature Reserve.
