Hi All,
We have just added the ability to filter your Shorebirds/Waders list based on
two simple pieces of information that are readily observable in the field.
These are:
1. Bill / Head Ratio
2. Curvature of the bill
The Bill / Head Ratio is calculated by dividing the length of the Bill by the
length of the Head. We have chosen the following ratios as these are most
easily determined by casual observation:
1. Bill is distinctly LESS than one Head length (usually from ¾ or less)
2. Bill is approximately EQUAL to one Head length (it can be less or greater
but at a casual glance it looks equal)
3. Bill is distinctly GREATER than one head length BUT less than two head
lengths (at a casual glance it is definitely greater)
4. Bill is distinctly GREATER than two head lengths BUT less than three head
lengths
5. Bill is distinctly GREATER than three head lengths BUT less than four head
lengths
6. Bill is distinctly GREATER than four head lengths BUT less than five head
lengths
Curvature of the bill is also easily (usually) determined by casual
observation. We have chosen the following possibilities:
1. Straight
2. De-curved
3. Up-curved
4. Curved to right
5. Spoonbill
The latter two are restricted to one species each and neither species is
observable in Australia (not yet anyway). But as the idea is to create apps for
other countries they are included for completeness.
It is hoped that combinations of these two features will easily allow you to
eliminate most species and give you a manageable list that you can choose from
based on other information provided.
As always any comments are appreciated.
