Hello Mark and Amanda,
Because it was along the east coast your Heath-wren can only be a
Chestnut-rumped - Shy Heath-wrens are birds of the inland mallee - Round Hill
is a great place to get them. Unfortunately many of the maps in Australian
field guides leave a lot to be desired mainly because they aren't big enough.
If you want to see bigger and better maps, look at the Reader's Digest Complete
Book of Australian Birds or the Atlas of Australian Birds.
If you refer to my website www.graemechapman.com.au you will see clear pics of
these two species. The main field mark for a Shy Heath-wren is a white spot on
the edge of the wing at the base of the primaries which shows very clearly in
my picture #499203D.
Note that your bird has a bent tail, a sure sign that it is or has been
recently sitting on a nest. It does have a fairly strong supercilium for a
Chestnut-rumped, possibly an old bird. Congratulations on getting the pic -
heath-wrens normally move so fast they are difficult to photograph.
Regards,
Graeme Chapman
