Hi All
I am presently writing a field guide to the birds of Kangaroo Island, SA. I
have previously followed Christidis and Boles taxonomy when writing
scientific papers etc; now I have jumped ship and have been listing my KI
bird species as laid out recently in an official bird list adopted by
Birdlife Australia. Do you think this is the right way to go? I have
included a family heading in the book with a short summary about each family
before dealing with each species. Problem is that the Birdlife Aust. bird
list does not include family names; I have been using the ones from
Christidis and Boles! I am not sure if that is appropriate either? Any
direction much appreciated.
I am presently sourcing as many KI bird photographs as possible from my own
collection and those of family and friends. I am going to be shy on some
species and wondered whether it is possible to source photos from other
people/places? I would not be in a position to pay large amounts of money
for them. All pics would be fully acknowledged of course. A small publisher
in Adelaide heard I was writing this book and met with me and has since
taken over the bankrolling/logistics of the whole thing. I just have to keep
toiling over my typewriter and help with design/layout etc once we get to
that stage early next year. Once the book is complete (proposed launch
spring 2014), I receive 30 free copies and 12% of any income from a book
that is going to have a limited market. As I have done previously with my
earlier modest KI bird book (1985; revised 1995, now out of print; hence
this new project), all money earned by me will be donated to bird
conservation on KI.
I look forward to any feedback and thank you in advance for your help.
Regards
Chris Baxter
