Birdline Western Australia

Published sightings for the week ending 1 Sep 2013.

Sat 31 Aug Brahminy Kite Cleaverville Reserve, north of Karratha
Having spent many weeks in the north west, I was surprised to see for the first time, a single Brahminy Kite, both at this site, and at Port Walcott. Have not sighted BK anywhere else so far. Also at Cleaverville - a pair of White Bellied sea-eagles with a fledged young, several pairs of Osprey on nest, many Painted Finch among the grass,

Thu 29 Aug Bourke's Parrots 40 km east of Warakurna turnoff on Great Central Road
A pair of Bourke's Parrots alighted in front of me just south of the road. The desert in this region is producing a good abundance and variety of species of birds at the moment.

Mon 26 Aug Star Finch Miaree Pool reserve (river, approx 34Km south of Karratha)
Good number of Star finch sighted by the river, not far from the bridge. This is the only site I've seen all three finches that occur in the north west - Painted Finches present in good numbers, and of course the Zebra. Also a good number of Variegated Fairy Wrens. And, flushed out two Little button Quail while following the tracks along the river.

Elegant Parrot Old Nicholson Road, Oakford
Slightly overcast weather with very light showers. Slow drive along the road and stopped near near the Oakford Bush Fire Brigade. First lot of Elegant Parrots near the Mobile phone tower. Second lot down near the Abernerthy Road turn. Lots of activity and low-lying water. Elegant Parrot (6) 2 separate groups of 3. Photographs taken to confirm ID.
