Two years ago I bought a pair of Minox BG 10 x 42 binoculars. These are
waterproof, roof prism binoculars with a wide field of view (6.5 degrees at
1000m). They are actually bottom of the range, but I can throughly
recommend them for beginners, and people like me who don't want to spend
too much on their optics. I might have gone for the next range up but as I
was buying them from the US they came in at US$299 (plus postage) and so
avoided import GST.

There has been some debate as to whether binoculars in the US have
warranties that will be honoured. Well, on a recent trip to Bali the left
hand lug attaching the shoulder strap inexplicably broke (only soft straps
used, no knocks, no rough handling).

After enquiring at Optics4Birding where I bought them from, I was directed
to Minox USA, then Minox Germany, and today I have learnt that Minox are
going to replace the binoculars.

So I can recommend this model, Minox binoculars' customer care, and buying
Minox optics from the US.
