Hi folks,
I am happy to share a good accessible spot to see Grey Falcons on the Barkly
Highway.
The site is a fenced off telecommunications tower about 130kms east of the
Stuart Hwy; (19 26 30 135 26 13)
We bush-camped on 19/06 13 adjacent the tower and observed a pair of adult
Grey Falcons for over 30mins about 2/3rds of the way up the tower. They flew
in just after dawn on the 20/06/13 about 5 mins apart (male first) and left
about 5 mins apart (female first). They were gone by 0715.
My guess is that the birds regularly use this tower early in the mornings.
They were not at all worried about us or our camp fire. Given that this is
on a public road reserve, not a nesting location, easily accessible about
200m south off the highway and an excellent camp site outside the locked
fence of the tower itself , I see this as a good site to share. There are,
of course, other towers along the Barkly that are probably used also. So
maybe check other towers (usually about 20kms apart) if you dip at this one.
Given the amount of droppings (presumably GF poo given the exact spots that
they perched) on the metalwork observed, I suspect that this pair use it
often.
There are many honeyeaters there also especially the Golden-backed spp of
Black-chinned HE common in the immediate vicinity.
Cheers,
Bill
