Ian,
I too was at the forum yesterday and it was a truly amazing experience to be
among the first to see the high quality digital imagery, video and to hear the
story behind its find.

I concur with your sentiments about playback. I think people would think twice
before demanding the call to be made available. Indeed I think the issue of
releasing the calls is a mute point. John provided many examples when playback
of the NP call proved to be counter productive - when the birds were known to
be near, he played the call and the birds did not respond again for days on end.

John made it clear that before any location information is released, a study of
the bird's behaviour and ecology is paramount. I wholeheartedly support this.
We have waited more than 100 years for this find, so what will a few more years
mean?

Regards
Alastair

I attended the Night Parrot forum yesterday, and was really impressed by the
talk, pictures and video that was presented. Congratulations to John, Tom,
Steve and the team on the presentation, and the years of hard work that went
before it. I was also impressed with the efforts that the team has put in to
keep the landowners on side, and the identification of major threats such as
habitat and burning, cats, and keen birders to the survival of the species.
John really stressed the value of disturbing the species as little as possible,
as they are an extremely shy and wary creature, and as he says they are the
hardest bird he has ever worked with. To that end I quite understand that John
does not want to put out in the public arena any electronic media re the call.
Until the team understands more about the bird, I think that it would be
foolish to put the call out there so that everyone who has a desire can go and
disturb them. Until similar habitats are mapped and survey teams
can thoroughly investigate, I agree with John in leaving the calls with him
and the team.
