The nature tourism, scientific research and conservation project will be the
first expedition of its kind to tackle insidious micro-plastics in Australian
waters. The mission, under the supervision of Monash University’s Jennifer
Lavers is to collect data on the millions of multi-coloured plastic remnants
killing marine wildlife at an alarming rate off Australia’s spectacular east
coast.
Between August 20 and September 12, East Coast Odyssey would like to find
someone to join the expedition to help out as a guide. The candidate must:
Be competent at identifying seabirds; Be reasonably competent at identifying
marine mammals (or at least able to use their field skills to identify them
with the help of field guides);Own a camera and be able to take good
photographs of marine wildlife as well as day to day activities on the
vessel;Have great interpersonal skills, to help non-experts learn more about
the wildlife of the area; andHave good sea legs. Be able to get themselves to
Hobart by 19 August (note, all other living expenses are covered while on board
the vessel).
The trip will comprise:
7-days sailing from Hobart to Eden, via a day or two on Flinders Island; 5 days
in Eden NSW, for half day excursions in Twofold Bay;4 days sailing from Eden to
Ulladulla;3 days in Ulladulla NSW, for half day excursions; and4 days sailing
from Ulladulla to Sydney.
During the north bound sailings, we'll be spending as much time as possible
(weather permitting) over the continental shelf.
