Hi Eric,
This is a very common introduced species in NZ, but semi-migratory in its
natural (northern hemisphere) range.... this is the time of year (late autumn)
for movement. Could it be that some of the NZ birds do move about and this one
has got itself out to sea or on board a ship and hence rather a long way from
home?
And yes they don't like it too warm..
