It does happen - the chicks are so light that they usually fall to the ground without hurting themselves.

It depends on what is on the ground when they land - if it's reasonable habitat then they go on with life as if they had been hatched on flat ground. If not, say the roof is surrounded by a large concrete car park, , they come in to the care of wildlife rehabbers every year because of this sort of circumstance.

Regardless of hatching circumstances, many of the chicks would be eaten by cats, foxes, raven and other predators.
