Update on malleefowl crops. A roadkill bird that was dissected on behalf of
Parks Victoria contained only canola seeds and a tiny fragment of a native
plant leaf.

Early on this thread there was a post about an investigation of a road
killed Mallee Fowl that had only native vegetation in its digestive system.
The canola story, while convincing, is not definite.

Hi,
I have been following this thread on birding-aus but have not had an
opportunity to visit the area.
Perhaps the road sides provide canola and other seeds plus stones suitable
for gizzard grinding.
Canola seed must be widely available in crops and many roadsides but the
concomitant presence of many stones suitable for ingestion may determine
optimal feeding sites.
