Occasionally on Birding-Aus we've seen posts about how good (or
not-so-good) binocular or camera repair places have been. Well,
here's one about a GPS company.
I use a Bad Elf GPS. This isn't your normal hand held GPS receiver,
it's a dongle about the size of a 20 cent piece that connects with an
iOS device through the standard 30-pin connector. If you're an iPod
Touch owner like me, it gives you a full-functioned GPS where none
existed, and if you've got a "GPS" enabled device like an iPhone, it
greatly improves the accuracy of what you've already got (which I
understand is not great). I won't go into the price (I'm not selling
them and I don't have any interest in the company) but let's just say
(and there are a number of B-A subscribers who will testify to this)
I'm cheap.
After nearly two years, my Bad Elf developed an intermittent fault -
in either the cable or the connector, it's not clear. Anyway, I got
onto the company to see if I could get a replacement cable. The
support person had me do a few things, including quoting the serial
number and "hardware revision". The very next day they got back to me
to tell me that they wanted to replace the unit, cables and all. The
unit's now on the way. It turns out mine was one of the very first
units they shipped, so it might have been teething problems with the
hardware.
You gotta love dealing with a company that stands behind its products.
I'd recommend a Bad Elf to anyone, and even more now.
