We had a Buff-banded Rail in our front garden in Box Hill from June to August last year. On Saturday, my son told me that he saw an unusual bird in our dirveway last Saturday. I asked him if it was a Buff-banded Rail and, after a quick Google search, he confirmed that it was. This morning, I saw the Rail in our front garden. It was using the birdbath, preening, and generally making itself at home. It is quite relaxed but disappears into the hedge or among the tussocks if we get too close. I assume that it is the same bird that took up residence last year.
