Hi John,
Have you ever heard of Creative Commons? You may use any image published
under such a licence, provided that you meet certain conditions. The most
common licence is CC-BY-SA-3.0
(http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/), which allows use provided
that you attribute the work and that you share it under the same licence.
The good news is that there are a huge number of Creative Commons licenced
images of birds already available on the internet. Wikimedia Commons
(http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page) is probably the largest such
collection. I should think that there are photos of thousands of species
there. I've certainly got many photos that you can use under such licences.
Conversely, perhaps I could encourage you to give people the option of
sharing their images under CC-BY-SA-3.0? That increases the utility of the
images because it allows reuse on other projects, including Wikipedia. Of
course, someone that derives significant income from their photography might
not be receptive, and a few will probably give excuses, but some will
accept, so it is worth trying. If you want your website to leave a real
legacy, then you might also consider licencing the data under CC licences
too.

Subject: Request for permission to use your photos

Hi Friends,
I am sending out a general appeal to give me your permission to use any bird
photos you have on the web on my website: http://worldbirdinfo.net
If you go the website, you can immediately see a statement of my aims, which
is,briefly, to produce the maximum amount of information about every
species of bird in the world.
The site carries not a single advertisement, and not a single promotion. IN
other words it is totally non-profit. And If you agree, I will acknowledge
you in my acknowledgment page and also in every photo of yours that I use.
Many photographers have already kindly agreed to let me use their photos.
And If you are not a professional, that is, if you do not expect to raise
money from your photos, what difficulty would it cause you to have another
copy on the web, with full acknowledgment.
Thanks,
Dr John Penhallurick
