Paul,

One man's conurbation is another man's urban sprawl. I think that conurbation 
is becoming more popular because gives an impression that some thought and 
planning is involved. In reality, it is more like the aggregation behaviour 
seen in some slime moulds. It could be argued, though, that slime moulds are 
capable of more efficient planning.
