The calls are distinctive with Bassian having a drawn out blackbird-like song. The black edging to the rump feathers are as thick as those on the back whereas in the Russet-tailed they are thinner. Bassian is more olive brown while Russet-tailed is richer brown. Russet has a larger patch of white on the outer tail feathers, Bassian has only a small white area not easily seen in the field.

I will send you some photos of hand held Russet-tailed Thrushes and a Bassian Thrush via a separate emails.

G'day all

I'm in Dorrigo tonight and planning to spend all day tomorrow looking
for Paradise Riflebird. In the meantime I saw several Thrushes around
the national park office at stumps tonight. In fact I picked one up
from the lawn. It was probably stunned after hitting a window so we
left it to recover (or not). Lovely to hold one and have a good look.
The thing is the ranger tells me both are there but he couldn't pick
them. What should I look for?

Cheers
Steve
