Yep, I'd definitely be a bit wary about doing the Dattuck Track. It's pretty
sandy in parts. I've driven Land Rover, X-Trail and Subaru Forester along
different parts of the track and it's tough going, especially if you were on
your own. It's somewhat similar to the Salt Lake Track in the Little Desert,
but with a few more bends. Try it if you're adventurous, but you 'd need to
inform the ranger about your exact movements and timeline.
When I'm visiting the park I tend to go the long way round - though Hopetoun
and Patchewollock. It's a nice drive (about 80 km, which is nothing in 'country
km'), with Blue Bonnet, Brown and Rufous Songlark and a chance of Crimson Chat,
White-backed Swallow and Spotted Harrier along the way.

Hmm, I'd be a bit weary about doing it in a Subaru. I've bogged a LandCruiser
on that track (admittedly it was carrying seven people at the time), but it
depends greatly on how churned the track is. The track between Wonga and
Casurina is quite popular with 4WD clubs, and they are often quite numerous and
don't mind churning the track (in fact, some think it's fun to really bash
their vehicles around, which makes it very difficult for the next person along
the track).
Having said that an X-Trail shouldn't have too many problems.
