My non-birder daughter lives in Blackburn, near Furness Park and near a creek. Yesterday (Th.27 Sept., a very warm windy day) she rang to say she had seen a completely new bird in her garden. "'Walking and running about on the ground, brown with streaks or stripes". When she tried to get closer for a better look, it took off vertically "with whirring wings". "Bigger than a duckling." My immediate suggestion was a Quail - possibly a Painted Button-quail, which are famous for suddenly appearing in suburban gardens. Daughter agrees it was similar shape to King Quail (known from aviaries) but bigger.

I report it in case anyone else has seen any, perhaps at Blackburn Lake (not very far upstream).
