This afternoon I was following the track on the eastern side of the Banyule Flats Billabong (it leads to the windmill on the Yarra bank). I had been seeing plenty of Grey Fantails already, but in this stretch I found myself in a positive swarm of them. As I advanced I kept disturbing yet another group of 6-12 birds which shot into the air, swooped about, pursued minute insects and went back to perch. I counted 50 to 60 birds in a short stretch and my estimate for their total numbers would be hundreds. They seemed fairly light-grey birds, unlike the rather blackish ones seen in winter. I assume they are a newly-arrived migrant flock.
Where will they be tomorrow?
