Marc,
Sounds like a Rose Robin, though not completely typical (a bit cut-short in the
trill).

Subject: [Birding-Aus] POST - Mystery Bird Call - Royal National Park, NSW
Hi all,
Whilst recording the dawn chorus on the banks of the Hacking River, Royal
National Park, NSW, I heard a call which I've never noticed before. It was
coming from high up in a tall eucalypt and sound somewhat like a referee’s
whistle. The closest call I could think of is that of a Fan-tailed Cuckoo (not
the descending trill, but the peeuw-weeeuew call as recorded here) . But this
mystery call was consistently slower than the FTC and repeated dozens of times
in more or less the same way. If anyone has an ID or suggestion I would be
interested to know what you think.
One birder has suggested it may be Brush Cuckoo - what do you think?
