Hi Peter,
I did the same thing many years ago and had an absolute ball. The only advice I
would give you is if you can get 2 spare wheels - do so. My hire vehicle came
with only one and it was a fairly nervous trip back to Cairns with no spare
after the tyre blew out south of Iron Range on the return trip.
Cheers,
Carl

Peter,
When we went bird banding at Iron Range last November we ended up hiring
from 1300 Truckhire. They were referred to us by another hire company
that didn't have what we needed at the time, and were cheaper than
Sergents. We had a Toyota Land Cruiser diesel booked but in the end we
were unfortunately provided with a petrol one instead. They were very
friendly and helpful.
Their conditions seemed reasonable and we ended up paying $149 per day
for the 10 days (total $1880.00 included $390 liabilities cover and free
200km per day).
Just another option.

Good luck.
