Hi Carl,

Whilst the SPOT GPS Messenger has some interesting features (and I think
I've seen other products that do similar) I don't think it should be
considered a replacement for a PLB or EPIRB. PLBs are monitored by the
appropriate authorities and the activation of a PLB will immediately
instigate predetermined actions, including a full SAR (Search and Rescue)
operation. The SPOT GPS Messenger and similar products rely on an
international organisation receiving the SOS message - and having that
organisation contact the emergency services (basically dialling 000 in
Australia). Whilst this may sound similar, it is not exactly the same -
there is no immediate action, no immediate SAR operation launched, and so
on. Furthermore, once a PLB has been registered, it remains registered. With
SPOT GPS you need to pay an annual fee of $US115 to keep the service going.
All that being said, the SPOT service is quite good - the SPOT Connect
device is better (in my opinion) than the SPOT Messenger because it allows
connection by Bluetooth to an iPhone or Android smart phone, allowing you to
send emails, messages and social network posts. It is also worth looking at
the various satellite phones on offer currently, quite affordable when
paired with pre-paid access. Many of these phones have smart phone
capabilities, including texting and the ability to connect to a computer to
offer satellite internet connection.

Dear All,

Has anyone had any experience with the SPOT GPS Messenger as an alternative
to a PLB. The text messaging feature looks useful. Imagine being able to
order a case of Grange from on the Birdsville Track.

For those that are unfamiliar, the SPOT GPS Messenger can be seen at

Cheers,

Carl Clifford
