Hi all
I'm sure someone out there knows a lot about the terns of the WA coast
and can ease my mind. On a recent visit to Lancelin, we saw plenty
(20+) of small terns on or near Edwards Island every time we went over
for a look. Unfortunately though, they were just outside of good
viewing range with our bino's and camera. They seemed to be mid size,
bigger than Fairy, smaller than Crested, but it was hard to tell as they
weren't in the same space as the Cresteds and we never saw any
Fairies. They were very pale-coloured but with an intensely black cap
and what looked like a red beak. I decided they were Roseates, but I
just don't know the area well enough to be 100%.
I've posted the best of my rather poor photos on Picasa at:

There doesn't seem to be much info on WA on the atlas. I've looked at
Frank O'Connor's site and it suggests that Roseates are reasonably
common but they are not mentioned at Lancelin. Also, these birds looked
like they could be breeding on that island, which might be significant.
There was also an Osprey there each time, who also seemed to be
breeding! Lovely.
Thanks! Janine
