Hillston being on the Lachlan River and recently having a flood, many of the
tributies from the over flow of the Lachlan, such as Willandra, Ganowlia Creek
will hold water and as such, good for water birds especially watercourses with
plenty of Cumbungi, Willandra Creek, good for bitterns, Nightherons in Black
Box. If you go out the Ivanhoe road on to the plains saltbush country you will
get species such as White-winged Fairy-wrens, Orange Chats, Banded Lapwings,
Australian Dotterals and Pratincoles. Willandra NP is worth a visit as is
Yathong/ Nombinnie NR, near Roto for mallee species such as Yellow-plumed and
Grey-fronted Honeyeaters. The Hillston STW is worth a visit, out the Lake
Cargelligo road, also Varigated Fairy-wrens (Purple-backed race) and Pink
Cockatoos, Mallee Ringneck, Mulga Parrot, Red-capped and Hooded Robins. In the
box woodland of either River Red Gum, Bimble Box or Black Box if flowering then
you should get a good selection of honeyeaters, check any flowe
ring Emu-bush for White-fronted, Black or Pied Honeyeaters
Overall you should get a good birdlist especially if you are there for a month
and with the season so good.
Good Birding
