Pacific Gull plumages and ageing criteria are described and illustrated with photos in James, D.J. 1995. Picking a Gull-friend: Identification of Black-backed Gulls. Wingspan 5(2):34-9. They are also described in greater detail with different emphasis in both the 'Field ID' and 'Plumages' sections of HANZAB Volume 3 (1996), with plates painted by Jeff Davies. Jeff may or may not still stand by the accuracy of his illustrations but I stand by the plumage texts as entirely accurate and reliable.
