Thanks to those on Birding-Aus who responded to my enquiry. I did quite a
bit of additional research and ended up of the view that the latest Olympus
LS-3 Linear PCM Recorder looked pretty good (actually recommended for nature
recording, eg birdsong). $299 from the local Olympus distributor, $229 on
the Web (locally). Called in to Camera World in the city (Melbourne), on the
shelf, listed at $269, sold it to me for $229. A professional
sound-recording acquaintance played with it a bit, showed me how simple it
was to use (it is capable of vastly more than I will be using it for - at
least initially) and was suitably impressed by its performance. It's
certainly very convenient and compact, and hopefully won't need external
speakers for most field purposes. It'll be interesting to see how it goes
(I'm off to Mexico tomorrow).  Richard
