Birdswing Birding & Wildlife Tours Pelagic trip off Port Fairy, Victoria
Sunday 19th February 2012



Observers: Neil Macumber (organiser & report writer), Samantha Greiner,
Murray Grant, Helen O’Donnell, Gary Deering, Michael Stone, Sue Taylor,
Ken Bridgewater, Irene Sturt, Don Sturt, Clive Curson, Sonja Ross, Geoff
Ross & Steve Morvell.



Conditions: Mild day with 90% cloud cover.  The seas were low with 30cm
swells increasing mid morning to ½ to 1 metre.



Overview: Left the Port Fairy wharf at 0728 EST along the Moyne River out
to sea heading at 206˚.  Fairly low number of birds until the second stop
38˚46’50S 141˚51’26E, 51.7 fathoms where 100+ short-tailed shearwaters
seen.  The forth stop produced the most species seen including Great
Shearwater with 17 Whitecapped (shy) Albatross, 4 Black-browed Albatross, 7
Buller’s Albatross, 2 Great-winged Petrel, 1 Great Shearwater, 2 Short-
tailed Shearwater, 1 Fluttering Shearwater , White-faced Strom-Petrel and 3
Australasian Gannets.  The fifth stop 38˚44’752S 141˚41’737E, 82.5
fathoms drifting 38˚44’120S 141˚41’421E, 76.9 fathoms produced 60plus
Short-tailed Shearwaters, good numbers of Whitecapped (shy) Albatross,
Black-browed Albatross as well as one Yellow nosed Albatross and 3
Buller’s Albatross and a pod of 10plus Common Dolphin.



Mammals: Three pods of Common Dolphin, one Australian Fur Seal and an
unidentified whale blow.



Birds: 26 species of birds with 13 species off shore.  The highlight is the
sighting of a Great Shearwater.   Whitecapped (Shy ) Albatross-good numbers
with up to 20 together at the fifth stop;  Black-browed Albatross- a
juvenile seen at third stop and 4 and 5 at the fourth and fifth stop;
Yellow-nosed Albatross; Buller’s Albatross-7 at stop four; Great-winged
Petrel; Great Shearwater; Flesh-footed Shearwater; Short-tailed Shearwater -
good numbers with 100+ at second stop and 60+ at the fifth stop; Fluttering
Shearwater; Hutton’s Shearwater; White-faced Storm Petrel; Common Diving -
Petrel and Australasian Gannet.  In the river and close to shore Little
Penguin, Crested Tern, Chestnut breasted Shelduck, Musk Duck, Great Egret,
Little Pied Cormorant, Australian Magpie, and Australian Hobby.
