Hi Roger,
The fire was actually on Sunday. From the media reports (which said 1ha, 5ha
and 20ha in different reports!), I doubt that it was a controlled burn.
Below is some text from one of Ash Island's most regular visitors, Nev
McNaughton:
"It was behind the line of Mangroves East of the start of Ramsar Rd., there's
a big open area of Kikuyu there and it burnt that and some Saltmarsh, no real
damage other than Grass Owls have been reported in there.
Access to the island is no longer a problem."
Incidentally, as far as I'm aware no wagtails were seen on the island over the
weekend despite numerous observers being out there.
Mick

Subject: Ash Island Fire
Hi,
According to the NSW RFS web site there was a 20 Ha grass fire at Ash Island
(Newcastle) today. It is now listed as under control. Does anyone know where
on the island it was, and whether it was a planned hazard reduction burn or
accidental. I was there last week and did not see any notification about
planned burns.
Regards
Roger.
