Hi Martin,
I don't think i would recommend a Gimbal style head for a spotting scope. Much
better to get a video style fluid head.
The movement isn't precise enough for a scope and I don't think they weigh
enough to get a good balance either. I only use my scope on my Mongoose if i
really really have to. Having a handle gives a more subtle and controlled
movement which is what you want. A gimbal head is meant for heavy telephoto
lenses to make the lens feel weightless and be swivelled quickly and smoothly.

PS - not sure what brand etc you are looking at but there are heads available
in Aus although the Wimberley and Mongoose are best sourced from OS
