G’day All,
To any central Australian birders or folks that might be headed this way, the
Alice Springs sewage ponds have been closed to birdwatching access by Power &
Water today.
This is another temporary closure as there has been another spike in the number
of feral dogs and cats getting about the facility. The folks in administration
said today that they hope the ponds will be open again in a couple of weeks but
it will depend on how successful the feral control program is.
If there are any visitors inbound that are disappointed by this news, feel free
to contact me off list for advice about other birding sites as there are still
plenty of places around town producing interesting sightings. It is raining as
I write this and many places through the ranges are still holding plenty of
water. The Centre is still seeing the benefits of population booms in wildlife
populations resulting from a couple of years of good rain and it seems that we
might be having another one – the rainfall so far this year is a shade over
517mm which is still well above the mean.
Cheers,
Chris Watson
