Hi all,

For those of you who haven't seen it, there has been a recent report of a count
of 57 Aussie Painted Snipe by Steve Edwards, Dick Jenkin and Dave Stuart on a
private property in the Macquarie Marshes on Birdline.

See http://www.eremaea.com/BirdlineRecentSightings.aspx?Birdline=6

It's worth looking at for the image alone, in which there are 30-odd birds!

The recent Action Plan for Aust Birds estimates the entire population at
between 1000 and 1500 individuals, so the Marshes count  epresents 3.8% of the
upper estimate.

Is anyone aware of such a gathering in the past?

I know Mike Honeyman posted recently about post-breeding flocks in good seasons
of 10-20 birds in historical records. Another recent thread on this species
mentioned 97 birds reported to Birdline NSW alone, and I know that the birds
initially reported on Ash Island as a count of 4 rose to 7 before they seemed
to leave that spot.

Now might be a good time to try and co-ordinate some sort of count across its
range?

Mick
