Hi all,
All the old faces are starting to show up at Werribee. Today there were two
Bar-tailed godwits on the rocks in the bay, just in from the Beach Rd gate.
At the Conservation Pond 35 E 9 there was the resident Wood Sandpiper
mid-way along the North edge and in the South- east corner there was a
Pectoral Sandpiper. Sharpies and Curlew Sandpiper are plentiful and some
still have good colour. The Grey Plover is still on the Spit and Red-necked
Stints are everywhere.
In the Western Lagoon there were three Little Egrets with interesting bill
colouring, with the lower mandible being yellow. One of the Egrets also
looked a size smaller and the legs seemed thicker. All in all it was enough
to keep me watching them for some time.
The Banded Stilts seem to have moved to the Summer Lagoon and there were
more than 200 there this morning. White-necked herons are also common across
the plant but what is missing are the ducks. They must all be up country
breeding somewhere.
There also seem to be more Whiskered Terns than I remember from past years
or it might just be that they are in big flocks all along the bay rather
than hawking insects out over the ponds, except for the few that still
prefer this method of hunting.
I also heard a report that there was a flock of 50 +/- Red-kneed Dotterel in
the Borrow Pit but most of them were gone before I got there. The most
interesting thing there is the small group of 10 or so Native Hens.
The tame Baillon's are still showing off down at the T Section but I have
still not seen the Little Bittern.
