Subject: Re: [BIRDING-NZ] Collection of oiled seabird data
Here's the latest from the Maritime NZ website - as of last
night;
There are now 36 field teams currently out working on the
wildlife response.
From Matakana Island to Maketu, the teams are scouring the area
for oiled
wildlife. In total, as of Wednesday night, the Wildlife Response
Centre has
41 birds in its care – a mixture of shags, petrels, dottrels and
little blue
penguins. There were three seals are also at the wildlife
facility, with two
more on their way to the centre. A total of 200 dead birds have
been
collected so far. The response team is currently setting traps
for seals to
check them for oil.
MNZ is also warning the public of scam callers after reports to
the Wildlife
team reporting people receiving phone calls asking for donations.
On Saturday, nine birds – seven little blue penguins and two
shags – were
brought to the wildlife response centre in Te Maunga with oil
coverage to
their feathers ranging from 30 percent to 100 percent. The birds
have been
washed and all are reported to be doing well. The eight birds
oiled birds
today are being treated by NOWRT.
There are 36 teams out in the field and at base. Teams have been
working on
beaches from Mount Maunganui to Maketu spit and on Mōtītī Island.
They have
compiled information on species and numbers to be expected.
Many reports of seals have been received and the seals are being
checked.
Wet seals are easily mistaken for oiled ones and healthy seals
will be left
on the beach. A fur seal plan has been developed in the event
that seals
become affected by oil. This plan covers people, equipment and
facilities as
well as the possible capture of seals.
*Is there any wildlife in the area?*
Department of Conservation (DoC) has advised that there are
Petrels, Little
Blue Penguins and a seal colony in the area. DoC and the National
Oiled
Wildlife Response Team (NOWRT) are monitoring the situation and
have
equipment and personnel standing by.
