Dear All,

There is currently an outbreak of Avian Paramyxo virus among pigeons in Victoria, apparently the first record of the virus in Australia. It appears to be restricted to birds kept by fanciers at the moment, not racing pigeons. Hopefully it can be contained and eliminated before spreading to other bird species, especially chickens.

If any Vic birders happen to come across unusual numbers of dead birds while out in the bush, it would be wise to contact the nearest DPI office or better still ring the Emergency Animal Disease Watch at 1800 675 888. Do not handle any sick or dead birds!
