I thought there might have been comment on this list about these cuts by now –
last Thursday my husband and his colleagues were told 50% of research staff
would go at Forest NSW research division (housed at Cumberland State Forest,
West Pennant Hills).
Over the past four years they were being jointly funded by Forests NSW and DPI.
The New Forests group (where my husband works) was unaffected this time, but
Ecology and Forest Health were dealt a massive blow. Unbelievably, a group of
colleagues who have been working together for years now have to compete with
each other for only a couple of jobs. Though all the research is relevant to
birds in one way or another, perhaps of most immediate relevance to this list
is the impact on the Forest Biodiversity and Ecology program led by Rod
Kavanagh, of whom many have probably heard or know, particularly in relation to
research on owls.
It is a terrible blow to wildlife research in NSW.
