As we are in Ballina for a short birding break, on Wednesday we decided to slip
over to Casino (60 km) to have a look for the Australian Painted Snipe reported
there. As we drove out along Barling Street, there were two cars pulling up
ahead of us. Within a couple of minutes one of the group had located the 4 APS
and by the time we left about an hour later there were about a dozen cars
there. The Tweed Valley birders had arrived on masse. All had good views of
the birds as they loafed and preened. The birds were at the largish wetland on
the left of Barling Street after it becomes gravel. They were towards the
further end of the swamp from town and about 40 metres from the road sitting on
drying hyacinth. We parked close to 28° 50' 07.24" S and 153° 02' 57.51" E.
There were three males and one female.
