Sorry Philip
I gave my location in my first post but didn't consider how many posts have
been made since then.
I live in Box Hill, an eastern suburb of Melbourne. Our neighbourhood has
fairly conventional gardens with lawns and exotic plants and we live
opposite a park with native trees, regularly mown grass and some understory
plants. The nearest wetlands are Blackburn Lake (2km as the rail flies),
Koonung Creek (about 2.2km away) and Blackburn Creeklands (about 1.1km).
Michael Tarburton says that Buff-banded Rails are seen at Blackburn
Creeklands.
Our front garden has a dense Westringia hedge and solid clumps of tussock
grasses, Lomandras and Dianellas and it would be very easy for a Rail to
remain unobserved. Our dogs probably discourage the Rail from visiting the
back garden but there is dense understory where the dogs are excluded. The
neighbours' gardens are more conventional.

Subject: Resident Rail again
I was talking to my neighbours on Sunday afternoon and asked them if
they had seen any unusual birds. My neighbour said, "Like that one
behind you?"
Sure enough, the Buff-banded Rail walked out from between some tussocks
in my front garden!
My neighbours have seen the Rail in their back garden off an on over the
the last month or so.
