Hi Tom & Paul,
I agree with Paul's comment on wing and bill shape - both pointing towards
Sooty. I'd like to add that the body appears not only elongate (Paul) but also
heavy and muscular, which again points toward Sooty. In picture 3 the forehead
appears quite steep but I would rather explain that by the odd angle of the
picture than interpret that as a field mark pro Short-tailed. The underwing
pattern can be tricky at times since there are "silvery-flashed Short-tails" as
well, but again I agree with Paul that the underwing flash on the last photo
looks like that of a Sooty.
In conclusion: I agree with the ID Sooty Shearwater.
Cheers,
Nikolas

Hi Tom, it's not good lighting conditions but the last photo does show some
white on the underwing. The rather long, broadish wings and body too elongate
for Short-tailed and the clincher for me, the long, heavier bill makes this a
Sooty Shearwater for mine. There appears to be a degree of feet projection.
Cheers - Paul W.
